3 New Berlin Students Are Latest National Merit Scholarship Winners

Three students from New Berlin were selected for a college-sponsored merit scholarship, the National Merit program announced Wednesday.

NEW BERLIN, WI — Three students at high schools in New Berlin are among a select few across the nation who were selected for the latest round of scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The program announced the third round of 2022 winners on Wednesday. Those who were selected will receive a college-sponsored merit scholarship, according to a news release from the program. The awards will give students between $500 to $2,000 for each year they study at the college that is funding the scholarship.

The three students in New Berlin and many more across Wisconsin are among 2,600 students in the U.S. who learned they were winners on Wednesday. By year's end, NMSC expects to award about 4,000 scholarships.

Over 150 higher education institutions are funding the awards for this round, including private and public scholarships in most states, NMSC said.

Students who entered the competition took the 2020 Preliminary SAT and advanced to become a finalist by submitting a scholarship application, which included an essay and information about awards, extracurriculars and leadership, NMSC said.

Here's who won in New Berlin:

  • Mohima S. Aich from New Berlin West High School has a future probable career field in neuroscience and won a scholarship to study at The University of Texas at Dallas.
  • Claire E. Lodermeier from Eisenhower High School has a probable future career field in software engineering and won a scholarship to study at The University of Arizona.
  • Kayla L. Sanders from Eisenhower High School has a probable future career field in software engineering and won a scholarship to study at The University of Alabama.
