  • Tune in to television and radio stations for warnings.
  • Get emergency notifications through wireless devices. The National Weather Service offers an emergency alert system through text.
  • The National Weather Service offers a nationwide network of radio stations, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radio, for local weather information. People should purchase a weather alert radio if they don't have one, the office said.
  • Outdoor sirens will alert people who are outside. This may not work for people who are in cars, homes or buildings, the office said.

The office recommended that people use a mix of each of these alert systems, since no single warning method is perfect, and no single method is guaranteed not to fail, the office said.
