Alderman Will Try to Become Next Oak Creek Mayor

At least one person has said publicly that he intends to seek the position of Oak Creek mayor in the April 3, 2012 election.

Alderman Steve Scaffidi said he has the experience and qualifications to become the next mayor of Oak Creek and will file the necessary paperwork to get on the ballot.

The current mayor, Dick Bolender, said he is still undecided about whether he will seek a fourth term in office.

No others have yet expressed interest in the race. Mark Verhalen, who has run for mayor in the past, said he "has a lot on his plate" and is undecided. Another previous candidate, Dimity Grabowski, did not return a message.

No one has yet registered their campaign with the city clerk's office, Acting City Clerk Christa Miller said.

Today, Dec. 1, marks the first day that candidates can begin circulating nomination papers. All paperwork must be turned in by 5 p.m. Jan. 3 in order for candidates to get on the ballot.

If three or more candidates turn in papers, a primary would be held Feb. 21.

Scaffidi said he made up his mind some time ago regardless of Bolender's decision. He applauded the mayor for his work, particularly with new development, to get Oak Creek to this point.

"Like any position, a set of fresh eyes and new ideas can be helpful," Scaffidi said.

Scaffidi has been on the Oak Creek Common Council for the past four years and is heavily involved in several community groups, such as the community center board and Kiwanis Club, and is active at civic events. His day job is working for the media research company Nielson.

One of his main objectives as mayor would be pursuing new development, particularly at the lakefront and Delphi, and recruiting companies to relocate to Oak Creek, he said.

He also said that more resident input is needed on talks regarding the redevelopment of Delphi, the "cornerstone" issue of Oak Creek.

"If I'm lucky enough to be elected mayor, I would make it a priority to improve communication between elected officials and residents," Scaffidi said.

The Oak Creek mayor is elected to a three-year term and receives $18,100 per year (A $16,000 salary plus a $175-per month car allowance).
