Honadel Proposal Curbs DOT Cost Analysis

Opponents say bill would weaken transparency.

Oak Creek's state representative, Mark Honadel, wants to eliminate cost-benefit analysis forms that the state Department of Transportation has to fill out on nearly every engineering project, according to a report from WISC-TV.

A WISC-TV investigation found that, based on those forms, the DOT spent millions more for outside consultants instead of state engineers, according to the report.

Honadel said the reports are time-consuming and costly and instead wants to have the DOT only do a year-end report comparing the difference between outside consultants and state engineers, the station reported. The DOT supports the proposal.

However, critics say it weakens transparency and doesn't address the contractor vs. state employee issue, according to the report.

As South Milwaukee Blog put it, the question is whether it's valuable cost-benefit analysis or unnecessary paperwork.
