Milwaukee Co. Supervisors Pass Resolution Opposing Conversion Therapy

The board approved the resolution in a 14-3 vote and are asking county officials to adopt a formal policy keeping funding from the practice.

OAK CREEK, WI — Milwaukee County Supervisors on Thursday passed a resolution that declares the county’s opposition to conversion therapy, which seeks to attempt to change a person’s sexual orientation through counseling or other practices.

The Board of Supervisors passed the resolution by a 14-3 margin and will now pass the resolution on to Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. The board said earlier this week that it is seeking to have the Milwaukee County Board of Mental Health adopt a formal policy that condemns conversion therapy and that would keep any county funds from being used on its practice.

Supervisors Deanna Alexander (18th District), Steve Taylor (17th District) and Patti Logsdon (9th District) voted against the resolution.

Conversion therapy, the resolution states, is a harmful and discredited practice, which has been condemned by the American Psychological Association as being potentially harmful and unethical.

In a statement released after Thursday’s vote, Board Supervisor Peter Burgelis said that the county has “finally taken action” in protecting the rights and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community with the passage of the resolution.

"This abusive practice has no place in our society, and it is our responsibility to protect Milwaukee County’s LGBTQ+ community. Studies show that conversion 'therapy' leads to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and even suicide, and we must take a stand against it. Lives depend on it." Burgelis said in the statement.

"Milwaukee County has a responsibility to promote the mental health and well-being of all its residents. Today Milwaukee County sends a strong message that our community is one where hate isn't tolerated. Milwaukee County is a safe and welcoming place for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. …(The vote) only serves to highlight the ongoing need for education and advocacy surrounding LGBTQ+ issues and the harmful effects of conversion ‘therapy.’"
