Woodman's Theft Attempt Leads To 100 MPH Flight, Crash: Report

One suspect tried running away, and a second tried telling police it was a carjacking according to police.

OAK CREEK, WI — Police in Oak Creek say two people who tried stealing more than $300 in groceries were caught after they fled police, crashed their car. One suspect tried running away, and a second tried telling police it was a carjacking according to police.

According to Oak Creek police call logs, police received a report of a theft from Woodman's at just after 2 p.m. on Nov. 30.

Police said the Woodman's loss prevention officer tried chasing after them as the theft suspects fled the store, but was not able to catch up to them. The suspects ditched the cart of groceries and left in a red Chevy Cruze. The loss prevention officer called police, and provided a description.

According to police, an officer on patrol quickly found the suspects driving south along the 8700 block of S. Howell Ave. They stood out right away, police noted, as they were driving 100 miles per hour.

Police said the officer attempted to pull these suspects over, only to have them drive in-and-out of traffic and in the emergency lane as they fled. They crashed in the 100 block of W. Ryan road. At that point, the car's driver, a 61-year-old Milwaukee man tried running away. An Oak Creek officer ran after him and tackled him to the ground.

According to police, the passenger, a 48-year-old woman from Ixonia, initially tried telling police she had been carjacked by her friend - a story that proved to be untrue.

Police said they found the groceries left in front of the store - they amounted to just over $331 in goods.
