Be on the Lookout for Girl Scouts Selling Cookies

As Girls Scouts celebrate 100 years of existence, area troops kick of annual cookie sales.

The connection made between Thin Mint cookies and Girl Scouts may be as natural as the combination of peanut butter and jelly, but as area troops amp up efforts for cookie sales this month it's not just that cookie connection they are focused on.

Girl Scouts are also celebrating a 100 year anniversary since the first troop gathered in Savannah, GA.

"The public anticipates the few weeks of the year when their cravings for Thin Mints are fulfilled, but to millions of girls, the Girl Scout Cookie Program provides an opporunity to discover their own skills, connect through teamwork and take action by achieving their goals," said a press release from the Girl Scouts of Manitou Council — the group that oversees local Port Washington and Saukville troops.

There are 23 troops between the two communities who started selling their cookies Thursday. Last year, the girls were able to sell about 27,000 boxes of cookies, according to Dawn Smith, the area Community Cookie Manager. Smith is in charge of overseeing the delivery of the cookies when they come in February.

Cookie sales help Girl Scouts earn badges; troops also earn 65 cents on each box and use the money as a group for a field trip. Some area troops are even saving for a trip down to Savannah, GA. where the whole program started.
