The Spot Offers Creative Deals to its Pub Patrons

Business owner Ann Dohms, who took over last spring, often makes up specialty drinks at the bar that was formerly Chuck's Engine Room.

Though Port resident Ann Dohms spent her time in college studying to become a surgical technician, the closest thing to "medicinal" in her every-day work probably happens mid-afternoon — when patrons roll up to her bar for happy hour.

Dohms, who worked as a bartender throughout her college career, said she always wanted to own a bar — so when was getting ready to move out, she couldn't pass up the chance.

Dohms reopened the bar as last May, after a bit of cleaning and painting as well as the addition of a new bartop and other renovations.

"It’s just fun for me, I really enjoy it — I just really always wanted to (own a bar) — this opportunity arose and I figured … jump in," Dohms said.

Dohms has been bartending since she was 18, and said it's the camaraderie with the "regulars" that she really enjoys — and something that came easy to her because of her "sparkling" personality, as her old boss used to tell her.

Her emphasis with The Spot is to be creative and affordable. She said she "tends to do a lot of crazy, made up stuff," such as the $1 brown bag shot — a top-secret recipe.

The Spot also sells $2 Brandy Old Fashioneds all the time, and also has a list of other daily deals, such as $1.75 craft/import mugs of beer and free poll on Mondays, $1 pucker shots on "Thirsty Thursdays," and $3.50 mimosas and Bloody Marys on Saturdays and "Sunday Fundays."

The bar opens Monday through Thursday at 3 p.m., and Friday through Sunday at 10 a.m.
