12-Year-Old Hospitalized After Atwater Park Near-Drowning In Shorewood

A 12-year-old was briefly lost in Lake Michigan near Shorewood on Tuesday, but she was conscious and breathing afterward, authorities said.

SHOREWOOD, WI β€” A 12-year-old nearly drowned and was hospitalized on Tuesday after her family briefly lost sight of her in Lake Michigan at Atwater Beach in Shorewood, according to authorities.

North Shore Fire/Rescue were called to the beach around 6:45 p.m. alongside Shorewood police. The 12-year-old was swimming with her family when they lost sight of her for about three minutes, the fire department said. Eventually, the family of the girl found and removed her from the water and brought her to the beach for CPR, according to North Shore Fire/Rescue.

When firefighters and police arrived, the girl was breathing, according to a news release. Paramedics treated her at the scene and brought her from the beach to an ambulance with a UTV. First responders then brought the girl to Children's Wisconsin in an ambulance.

When the 12-year-old made it to the hospital, she was conscious and breathing, authorities said.
