2 Shorewood Students Named National Merit Scholarship Winners

Two more Shorewood High School students were named winners in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship program on Wednesday.

SHOREWOOD, WI β€” Two students from Shorewood High School are among a select few nationwide who were selected in the latest round of scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The program announced the third round of 2022 winners on Wednesday. The students who won will receive a college-sponsored merit scholarship, a news release from the program said. Students will get between $500 to $2,000 each year from the college that is funding their scholarship, according to NMSC.

The two students in Shorewood that were included in Wednesday's announcement are among 2,600 students who learned they won the latest round. By the end of 2022, NMSC expects to award around 4,000 scholarships.

For Wednesday's round of winners, over 150 public and private higher education instutions were funding the scholarships, NMSC said. The students entered the competition when they took the 2020 preliminary SAT, and advanced to be finalists with a scholarship application that included an essay and information about leadership roles, extracurriculars and other awards, according to NMSC.

  • Mira Kahate-Desouza won a National Merit Marquette University Scholarship. Kahate-Desouza's probable future career field is bioengineering.
  • Adam Grant O'Connor won a National Merit Bowdoin College Scholarship. O'Connor's probable future career field is biochemistry.

Several students in Shorewood have won merit scholarships in Shorewood so far.

In April, Shorewood student Henry S. Heyden won the National Merit Rockwell Automation Scholarship. Heyden's possible future career field is computer programming, NMSC said in a news release.

In May, Shorewood student Nicholas J. Bucciarelli also won a $2,500 award from the program. Bucciarelli's possible future career field is activism, NMSC said in a news release.
