Early Count Has Shorewood School Enrollment on the Rise

The district will conduct an official enrollment count on Friday.

An early count has Shorewood’s resident student enrollment on the rise from last year, Shorewood School Supt. Blane McCann said Tuesday.

School officials will have more definite data after an official count Friday, but this is the second consecutive year for an increase, after years of decline.

State aid to schools is largely determined by the number of resident students in the district.

Shorewood won’t immediately see the benefits of an increase this year however, as state aid is set from a three-year average.

Last year, school officials considered due to the district’s declining enrollment, and the village’s aging population, but have since taken the school closure off the table.

As the district seeks to balance its budget, officials say increasing resident enrollment and establishing an endowment are keys to financial security.
