Five Historical Treasures From Shorewood Coin Shop
Some of the items date back to the time of Ancient Romans.
Shorewood Coin Shop is filled with unique historical finds dating back more than 1,000 years. Shorewood Patch took a stroll through the store Tuesday afternoon, and store owner Scott Gunter pointed out five unique historical treasures:
- A spoon that may have been made for Jefferson Davis' wedding. Davis married Zachary Taylor's daughter – against Taylor's wishes – in 1835.
- A funeral ribbon memorializing Abraham Lincoln's death in 1865.
- A political letter from 1804 endorsing Republican gubernatorial candidate Morgan Lewis over then-Vice President Aaron Burr to succeed Gov. George Clinton as the governor of New York.
- A deed written in December 1731 that outlines the purchase of a slave.
- Several bells, keys and other metal objects that were found in an archaeological dig in the United Kingdom. Gunter said the items date back to the Ancient Romans.
