Incumbents Clean Up in Shorewood Village Board Race
Trustees Jeff Hanewall and Thad Nation retain their seats; other races on Tuesday's ballot feature landslide victories for Shorewood's vote.

Incumbents Jeff Hanewall and Thad Nation retained their seats on the Shorewood Village Board with a comfortable win over the only other candidate.
Hanewall led with 1859 votes (41 percent) and Nation garnered 1690 (37 percent). Newcomer Avi Zarmi collected 955 votes, or 21 percent of the vote on Tuesday.
“I certainly didn’t take it (the election) for granted, and I am relieved and appreciative to know that most of the village approves of the way the board is going,” Hanewall said of his win re-election Tuesday night. “I think we have some really positive things and important projects going.”

Nation said he looks forward to continuing to work with other trustees on the overhaul of the village’s sewer system and new developments sprouting up on North Oakland Avenue.
"I’m very gratified; this is my first election, so running a very close second to Trustee Hanewall, who has served for six years, makes me feel very positive about what I have done over the last few months,” he said. “I look forward to serving the residents of Shorewood over the new few years, the best way I can.”

Zarmi couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday night.
Hanewall and Nation will serve three-year terms with a $1,000 annual salary.
On the School Board side, David Cobb was elected to one open seat, with 1283 votes, or 66 percent, over challenger David Gess who garnered 617 votes. Gess . Cobb will serve a three-year term with a $1,000 annual salary.
Voter turnout was low in Shorewood, with 32 percent of registered voters casting a ballot, according to election officials. A Board of Canvassers will meet later this week or early next week to verify election results. Until then, all results are deemed unofficial.
and Shorewood Municipal Court Judge Donal Demet ran unopposed for their current seats.

Meanwhile, in races for judgeship in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, administrative law judge Carolina Stark cleaned up in Shorewood with 71 percent of the vote over incumbent Nelson Phillips III in Branch 17 and lawyer Lindsay Grady edged out law attorney Hannah Dugan in Branch 23.
Roughly 73 percent of voters voted yes to downsizing the Milwaukee County Board and paying supervisors part-time wages for both of two advisory referendum questions.
And, in the first ever race for Milwaukee County comptroller, the county’s top financial officer, Scott Manske topped Kristie Bunting with nearly 65 percent of the vote in Shorewood.
Of residents who voted Republican in the presidential primary, 49 percent cast ballots for frontrunner Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor received 824 votes while former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum from Pennsylvania garnered 507. President Barack Obama ran unopposed in the Democratic presidential primary.
