Learn about Local Police in the Shorewood Citizens' Academy

Applications are now available for the 9-week course, which gives participates an inside look at the day-to-day operations of Shorewood police.

The is now accepting applications for its Citizens' Academy coming up March 1.

The program, a 9-week course, offers a unique, inside look at the day-to-day operations of the department. The academy increases understanding between the participants and the department through education and interaction with officers, helping residents to become more familiar with its local police.

The classes will be every Thursday night through May 10. There will not be a class on April 12 due to spring break.

Some of the topics covered in the academy are: drunken driving laws, traffic enforcement, criminal law and the criminal justice system, defensive tactics, firearms, domestic violence, drugs and crime prevention. Participants also ride along with patrol officers.

The course is free to any Shorewood resident, property owner, or person who is employed anywhere in the village. The course is also open to anyone who is currently enrolled in a criminal justice or police science course and considering a career in the criminal justice field. Applicants must also be at least 18 years of age.

Find applications on the police department's website, or stop into the station.  Completed applications can be mailed back, dropped of in person at the police department, or emailed to Sgt. Jeff Schmidt at jschmidt@villageofshorewood.org

Space is limited and the course is filled on a first come, first serve basis.
