Milwaukee Duo to Jazz-Up Hubbard Park

Mrs. Fun brings its acid-jazz to Shorewood's venue by the Milwaukee River.

Shorewood’s summer-long concert series continues Thursday, with hardcore electra-acid-jazz duo Mrs. Fun.

The Milwaukee-based duet of Connie Grauer and Kim Zick will play , 3565 N. Morris Blvd., starting at 6:30 p.m.

Grauer and Zick play “ a provocative blend of off-center jazz, ultra-funk, spoken word rap and their own brand of neo-cabaret,” their website says.

Grauer told Patch if you had to label their music, you could call it new jazz, but they do a lot of things.

"It's really a mix of jazz, funk and hip-hop," Grauer said.

The two started in Nashville, TN, where they recorded with popular artists like singer/songwriter K.D. Lang and the Indigo Girls. They later collaborated with the Violent Femmes’ drummer Victor DeLorenzo, on several solo recordings, after the two relocated to Milwaukee. They now live in Shorewood.

Grauer said they ended up playing in last year's concert series a week after Shorewood experienced severe flooding, and had to play in the lodge, so they are eager to play the outdoor venue.

"It is such a intimate venue, it really is beautiful," she said.

They have won numerous Wisconsin Area Music Industry awards including best contemporary jazz group three years in a row in the early 90s.
