Police Report: Local Man Bilked Out of $1,200 in Email Scam

A Shorewood man phoned police Friday after he realized he had been scammed out of $1,200.

The man told police he received an email that appeared to be from a friend claiming to be stranded in Spain with no cash, cell phone or credit cards.

He told police the friend asked for money to get home so he wired him the $1,200. The wire transfer came with a $42 transfer fee.

Police say the victim won’t be able to recover the money.

  • Police arrested a 41-year-old Shorewood woman early Monday morning for drunken driving after receiving a report of a reckless driver. Another driver spotted the woman driving erratically on I-43 and while driving into the village from Milwaukee. Police caught up with the woman in the 1400 block of East Kenmore Place at about 12:36 a.m. She failed a sobriety test and police are awaiting the results of a blood test to determine her blood alcohol level that morning. It’s her first drunken driving offense.
  • The rear window of a car was smashed out Saturday while parked in the 3700 block of East Prospect Avenue, causing $300 in damage. Police say nothing was reported stolen from the car.
  • A $200 Schwinn bicycle was reported stolen from a garage in the 2000 block of East Kensington Boulevard on Sunday. Police say it’s unclear whether the garage was locked, but there were no signs of forced entry.
