Shorewood School District Apologizes For Student Data Breach

SHOREWOOD, WI —The Shorewood School District has apologized to parents after mistakenly releasing students' personal information while responding to an open records request, according to TMJ4.com.

The report said Shorewood School District superintendent Bryan Davis wrote a letter of apology and said families of students included in the release of personal information were being contacted with additional details about the disclosure.

The breach, according to reports, occurred when a parent asked the district to see results of a district survey, only to find students' personal information had not been redacted. TMJ4.com reported the data mistakenly released included: numeric responses to the survey, student's name, ID number, school and demographic information like gender and ethnicity.

"Following an internal review, the District has instituted new procedures and authorizations to prevent this from happening in the future," Davis wrote in the apology letter. "We take our obligation to safeguard student information very seriously. Please accept our sincere apologies for this error."

However, parents told TMJ4.com this was not the first time the district had been forced to apologize for failing to safeguard their child's information.
