State Grants Citgo Extension on Filing Plan for Fuel-Contaminated Soil Clean Up
State Department of Natural Resources case manager says the gas station owner requested more time to work out details with his insurance company.
State officials have granted Citgo in Shorewood — in the village’s sewer system last month — an extension on developing a plan to clean up contaminated soil near his business.
As ordered by state Department of Natural Resources officials roughly a month ago, station owner Syed Rizvi was to hire a consultant and present the state with a plan to address fuel-contaminated soil by Monday. . to develop the clean-up plan.
However, John Hnat, the DNR program manager assigned to the case, said Rizvi’s attorney said Monday they would need extra time to secure funding and further approval from Rizvi’s insurance company.

“They are having a problem getting funds released through their insurance company,” Hnat said. “By the end of the week they should have the funds.
"Just as long as they are keeping me up to date, I don't have any issue with granting an extension."

Hnat said he expects a report to be filed by either Friday or Monday.
The consultant would likley perform tests to pinpoint the actual source of the problem near the station, followed by a cleanup effort, Hnat said.
