Crime in Village Down 19 Percent

Halfway through 2011, crime in Shorewood has waned 19 percent, compared to last year, according to data released by Shorewood police this week.

Shorewood police compared crime statistics spanning from January to June, with last year's same period.

There were 202 crimes reported during those six months last year with 164 thus far this year. Over seven categories of crime, all except for car theft and rape decreased, though only one rape was reported this year, and three car thefts each year.

Shorewood Police Chief David Banaszynski attributed the decrease to resident support and officers' hard work.

The village reported nine assaults, 11 burglaries and one robbery this year, compared to 12 assaults, 13 burglaries and four robberies last year.

Nearly 85 percent of the crimes reported so far this year were thefts, with 139. Theft has decreased 18 percent; 170 thefts were reported in 2010.

No homicides were reported in either year.
