Whipsawed Policies in Shorewood

Maybe it's time to stop chasing shiny projects.

Not long ago (2018), the Village was paying out $20,000 zero-interest loans to encourage duplexes to be converted into single-family homes. Yes, residents even covered the bank’s interest expense.

Now? The push is for more housing units β€” with big homes seen as better off split into duplexes, tri-plexes, or quad-plexes.


We’ve seen this before: decades ago, millions in TIF funds built the massive Metro Market. Later, more TIF money was used to help small businesses . . . the same ones hurt by competing with the Metro Market.

Maybe it’s time to stop chasing shiny projects. Let’s ask our trustees to end the TIF and redirect millions back to where they’re needed most: fixing pipes, lighting our streets, and supporting our schools.
