Local Student Wins Music Competition at UW-Eau Claire

The University Symphony Orchestra will feature the winning students of the orchestra's concerto competition during its concert at 7:30 p.m. March 15 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Nobuyoshi Yasuda, associate professor of music, will begin with Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, by Camille Saint-Saëns. Freshman Kaitlyn Witherspoon, Monona, winner of the string division competition, will perform the solo on cello.

Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, Op. 16, by Edvard Grieg will feature the piano division winner, junior Joe Phillips, Fond du Lac, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in C major will include a solo by senior oboist Alexandra Esser, Waukesha, winner of the wind division competition.

Next will be "Steam, Mist, Rain," composed by senior David Sumner, Fall Creek, composition competition winner. It will be followed by Richard Strauss' Concerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra, featuring wind division winner, senior Sarah Kubiatowicz, Eau Claire, on oboe.

The concert will conclude with "Hungarian Dance No. 6" by Johannes Brahms, featuring senior Alexander Jacques, Oneida, winner of the conducting competition.

Tickets, available online at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $6 for the public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger, and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
