The bar, dubbed 'Waukesha's original social club,' was established in 1948 by the family of the Wizard of Waukesha: Les Paul. Paul performed often at Club 400 back in the 1940s and 50s.
The site of the Club 400 was first established in 1894 as the Northwestern Hotel. It operated as a hotel for railroad passengers and workers from the train depot located across the street. The site later operated as a boarding house, cigar store, and soda shop, according to the bar's website.

Daniel "Poky" Pokwinski purchased the bar in 1981. The Club 400 was sold in October 2017 to its third owner, Club 400 bartender, Jimmy Lindenberg, the website said.
Andrea Dorantes told Patch they are not planning any major changes and want to keep the same look and feel of the longtime haunt.
"I would like to add a couple of things to the menu like pretzels and nachos and would like to add more drink specials and fun stuff for football. We just really want to keep the fun atmosphere while hopefully attracting and meeting new people," she said.
