'It Is Hard To Understand', Man Says After Finding Screws In Sub

"Food safety is of the utmost importance Cousins Subs," spokesperson said.

WAUKESHA, WI — A New Berlin man who says he found "multiple screws" in a Cousins Sub sandwich called Waukesha police after making the discovery.

The man, who was worried about retaliation and didn't want to be named, purchased three subs on Sunday. On Tuesday evening, he made the discovery when he was eating one of the subs.

Speaking to Patch, the man said he was put through a bit of a "shuffleboard game" between Waukesha, where he purchased the sub and New Berlin, where he resides. Waukesha police had a call log regarding the complaint and New Berlin Police confirmed the man contacted them.

"Yes, this just came into our department and a report is being written. The Cousins in question is in Waukesha, but the alleged victim didn’t eat his sub until he was back in New Berlin," New Berlin Police said.

The man told Patch he is "undetermined as to this point whether that was (the screws) intentional or not. It is hard to understand how screws are passed over when somebody is assembling a sub and there are multiple screws in that sub."

The man said he bit down hard on a second screw, causing "at least two fractures in his two back teeth." Part of a filling had popped out which caused him to spit everything out. He described the screws as stainless steel in between an 8th of an inch.

He said he bagged up the sub and took it back to Cousins Subs. He told Patch he was upset about the lack of concern from employees.

A spokesperson for Cousins Subs released the following statement:

"This is the first incident of this nature our Waukesha, Wisconsin, location has been notified of. Food safety is of the utmost importance to Cousins Subs, which is why we are investigating this reported incident with the guest and the local authorities. We invite you to contact the Waukesha Police Department with any additional questions pertaining to this reported incident".

The man said he is surprised no one felt the sub while it was being assembled and he had just asked for a light dusting of lettuce.

"You would think you would feel it if you were putting it on a sub," he told Patch.

He also said he understands that people are in a rush these days and mistakes can happen. However, he said anytime you are dealing with a food product, some tender, love and care and responsibility are needed.

The man told Patch the soonest he can have his teeth fixed is October and the treatment plan was quoted at over $4,000.

Concerned he might have internal bleeding, the man said he is scared to eat out of fear he might agitate something during the digestive process. He told Patch he knows he swallowed at least one after "passing it".
