Pewaukee's Black Horse Carriers To Say Open, Lay Off 35

Company officials said Black Horse Carriers is attempting to transfer as many employees as possible to open positions.

WAUKESHA COUNTY, WI — Less than a week after saying they plan to close their terminal in Pewaukee, Black Horse Carriers, Inc. says they're staying open, but with 38 fewer workers on-site.

Five days after telling the State Department of Workforce Development they were closing their terminal, company officials at Black Horse Carriers sent a second notice to the state, saying they will no longer be closing its doors in Pewaukee, and instead will be remaining open with a reduced workforce.

Company officials said instead of the original 68 workers that would be laid off, it will now be 38 workers.

The company said the layoffs will become effective on Saturday, March 7. Of the layoffs, company officials said five salaried positions, one hourly position and 32 interstate-exempt CDL Class A drivers would be permanently laid off, not counting employees who have worked fewer than six of the last 12 months.

Company officials said Black Horse Carriers is attempting to transfer as many employees as possible to open positions within the company, saying the layoff is due to a customer abruptly discontinuing to provide enough business to support the employee base.
