Suspect Dead After Waukesha Officer Hit By Gunfire In Home Check: Cops
A home check on Oakdale Drive in Waukesha Wednesday evening led to an officer being shot and a suspect being found dead, police said.
WAUKESHA, WI — An officer was struck by gunfire and a suspect was found dead after a landlord requested a check on a tenant in the 1500 block of Oakdale Drive Wednesday afternoon, Waukesha police said in a news release Wednesday.
Police were checking the home with the landlord around 4 p.m. but when officers went into the basement the female tenant shot at them, police said. An officer who was hit by the gunfire then shot the woman, the news release said.
Police then used aerial drones to locate the woman inside the basement, the release said. Officers eventually entered the home and found the woman dead downstairs, police said. A firearm was also recovered from the scene, police said.

Both of the police officers who were injured in the encounter are being treated and in good condition, police said. The officer who was shot was wearing a ballistic vest which was effective, police said.
The Greenfield Police Department is leading an investigation into the shooting with the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team.

"Initial information shows that the officers acted within state statutes and department policy, and
fulfilled the Mission of the Waukesha Police Department, 'A Pledge to Serve with Integrity,
Honor and Courage'," police said in the news release.
