Waukesha County Sheriff Issues Phone Scam Alert
Authorities say a scammer has called residents claiming to be from the sheriff's office and asking for money.
WAUKESHA COUNTY, WI — Authorities are warning residents to be on the lookout for a scammer claiming to be a representative from the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office.
The person would call residents alleging they had outstanding warrants and would request to be paid in pre-paid credits in order for them to go away, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. The scammer would then leave a call back number where unwitting residents can submit the card number and its access code.
The sheriff's office said it would never contact residents by phone if they had any outstanding warrants or to collect money. Residents would also not be asked to pay for any fees using pre-paid credit cards.
