Waukesha Officer Released From Hospital After Vest Stops Bullet
A Waukesha police officer suffered a chest injury from gunfire Wednesday but the round did not get through his ballistic vest, police said.
WAUKESHA, WI — The Waukesha police officers who were injured Wednesday night when a welfare check ended in a shootout have both been released from the hospital and are healing at home with family, police said in an update Thursday afternoon.
One of the officers suffered an injury to his chest when he was hit by gunfire but his ballistic vest managed to stop the round, which ended up hitting his body-worn camera, police said in a news release. Another officer was treated for minor injuries and released.
The shootout happened Wednesday after police were called to the 1500 block of Oakdale Drive for a tenant's behavior, police said. When police went into the home's basement a female suspect shot at them with gunfire striking an officer who then shot the woman, police said.

The suspect was later found dead in the basement, police said. Both of the involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave, in part to allow them the time to work through the emotions they may experience after the fatal shooting, police said.
The Greenfield Police Department is leading the investigation with the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team.
