Waukesha Resident Dies In Sunday Apartment Fire

Upon arrival, crews found smoke and fire coming from a first-floor apartment of a 47-unit apartment building.

WAUKESHA, WI — One person has died after an apartment fire on Big Bend Road in Waukesha on Sunday night.

According to the Waukesha Fire Department, firefighters and Waukesha Police officers responded to 1431 Big Bend Road for the report of smoke in the building.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke and fire coming from a first-floor apartment of a 47-unit apartment building. Fire crews made an aggressive interior attack, extinguishing the fire and locating a victim within five minutes of arrival, officials said.

"We are saddened to inform the public that the City of Waukesha lost one of its community
members inside the residence," Waukesha Fire Battalion Chief Jim Haakenson said. "We are working with the medical examiner’s office to determine manner and cause of death. No other occupants or firefighters were injured."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Waukesha Police and Fire Departments.
