WAUKESHA, WI — The Waukesha Board of Education met Monday evening to discuss its decision to opt out of a federal free lunch program.

At the meeting in the Lindholm Building, 222 Maple Ave., the board discussed the National School Lunch Program and its Seamless Summer options. The board decided to opt out of extending the Seamless Summer option in June.

The federal program would give free to all students without income requirements. Waukesha is the only school district in the state to opt out of the program.

The district said it opted out because of a decline in free lunch applications. The board also said that food was going to waste, and that lunches would still go to poorer students.

Parents responded with a rally in front of the district office Friday.

"People tend to think we are Waukesha, a suburb, and we don't have kids that need this food service, but we do. Hunger problems are everywhere," school district parent Laurel Peterson said at the rally.
