Waukesha Schools Offer Resources To Families After Uvalde Shooting

WAUKESHA, WI — The School District of Waukesha offered resources to families and students after a gunman opened fire and killed 19 children and two teachers in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas on May 24.

"We know that students will process this information differently," superintendent James Sebert said in a letter to parents. "We have student services staff on hand to assist students who are in need of extra support as they process this tragedy. We are also providing you with resources to use if your child has questions about what has happened."

The district was shocked and saddened by the tragedy and Waukesha schools grieved for families who lost loved ones in the senseless act of violence, Sebert added.

Resources include materials for helping children cope with tragedy, how to talk to children after disasters and tips for parents and teachers to discuss trauma with youths.

"We cannot accept that gun violence just happens. We cannot accept that kids might go to school and never come home," Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement on Tuesday. The governor called on other elected officials to act on gun control.

"Kids need to be safe in their schools. Educators need to be safe in their schools. Parents and families trust schools to keep their children safe. And right now, they are not safe," State Superintendent Jill Underly said in a statement on Wednesday.
