Waukesha Teen Charged In Fellow Teen's Death

Authorities say an 18-year-old Waukesha resident was behind the wheel of a van when a friend was thrown from the exterior, causing his death

WAUKESHA, WI — Nine months after a driving incident left 17-year-old Omar Cabarello dead, authorities say the person who was driving the vehicle Cabarello was riding in, has been charged.

According to court records, Dan S. Lazaro has been charged with homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle in Waukesha County Circuit Court. He was charged on March 6, 2020, about nine months after the incident took place.

Lazaro is due in court on March 23 for his initial appearance.

According to a JSOnline report, Lazaro was driving his mother's van with four friends of his on June 9, 2019, when Cabarello lost his balance while riding on the van's exterior. He fell from the vehicle which was moving between 20 and 25 miles per hour, fracturing his skull, police said. A day later, Cabarello died in the hospital, the report stated.
