Hermanas Restaurant To Open In July After City Approval

The Wauwatosa Common Council gave its approval in April, and the restaurant will open later this month.

WAUWATOSA, WI — A new Mexican restaurant will open later this month after getting the OK in a contentious Common Council approval process.

Dan Zierath and his daughters, Gabbi and Betsi Zierath, plan to open Hermanas at 11320 W. Blue Mound Road on July 30, according to a Facebook post. The new restaurant will replace Thirsty Duck, which closed in 2020.

The new restaurant met turbulence from the Wauwatosa Common Council when it applied for a temporary use permit in the spring. The council voted 14-2 in April to approve the new restaurant after initially rejecting it in March. Some members of the council expressed concern about noise complaints at Dan Zierath's other bar, Jackson's Blue Ribbon Pub, which is next door to Hermanas.

The owners had hoped to open earlier. "Sadly we have to push the opening of our new restaurant Hermanas to Friday 7/30," the owners said in a Facebook post. "We want to make sure everything is perfect for our delayed opening!"

Hermanas is meant to be a trendy, modern Mexican restaurant, Gabbi Zierath said in a letter to the Wauwatosa Plan Commission in March. The restaurant will have gourmet food and drinks and live music on the patio, she added.

The restaurant's look is based off of the Zieraths' visits to Tulum, Mexico. "Our goal was when you walk in the doors, we want you to feel like you're on vacation," Dan Zierath told Patch.

Gabbi and Betsi Zierath own Zisters, 13425 Watertown Plank Road in Elm Grove. Hermanas will operate similarly to Zisters, Gabbi said.

Proposed restaurant hours are from 3-10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 3-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3-9 p.m. on Sundays, Dan said. The bar will still open until regular bar close time, he added.
