Milwaukee County Transit System: Rosa Parks Scholarship Announced

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI— The Milwaukee County Transit System is keeping a seat open on every bus in the fleet on Rosa Parks Remembrance Day on December 1. Each reserved seat will include a red rose and a special placard that features Parks’ photo and a message about her courageous act, according to MCTS.

Parks, known as the"first lady of the civil rights movement," was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, setting off a bus boycott by 17,000 black citizens and reinvigorating the struggle for racial equality.

MCTS announced on Monday the Rosa Parks Tribute Scholarship.

High school seniors who live and attend school in Milwaukee County and who plan to attend a trade school, college, or university should complete the scholarship application. Students must also submit a short essay inspired by Parks’ quote, “Each person must live their life as a model for others.”

Entries must be received by January 8, 2021 in order to be considered. Three winners, who will each receive $1,000 towards their higher education, will be announced on February 4, 2021 – Parks’ birthday.

Who Is Eligible:

• High school seniors who live and attend school in Milwaukee County.
• Must plan to be enrolled in a trade school, college or university in 2021. For the scholarship winners, MCTS will send the funds directly to the school.

How to Apply:

• Students must complete the application, submit an essay and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor or other trusted adult.
• Submit an essay (250 words minimum, 500 words maximum) inspired by this Rosa Parks’ quote: “Each person must live their life as a model for others.”
