Mysterious Campaign Flyer Targets Wauwatosa Mayor Candidate
Wauwatosa mayor candidate Nancy Welch said she received one of the flyers in the mail herself.

WAUWATOSA, WI — One of the two people running for Wauwatosa mayor said she's the subject of a mysterious political mailing targeting her. So much so, that she's received one of the flyers in her mailbox.
Nancy Welch, one of the top two vote-getters in the Wauwatosa mayoral primary on Feb. 18, said she got a flyer from the Cititzens for Effective Government in the mail the other day.
The group does not identify where it's from, who runs it or what they've been up to.

"It is amazing to think that outside interests are so concerned about the outcome of a local election that they would spend so much money to ensure selection of the candidate of their choice," Welch told Wauwatosa Patch. "Second, the material was so blatantly untrue and so full of scare tactics that it was almost a parody of itself."
Welch disputed the claims presented in the flyer, saying she did, in fact, vote against the 2019 budget. "I am on record as voting against because I did not support the resulting increase in debt or the reduction in police and fire personnel." she said to Patch.

Her opponent, Dennis McBride, also condemned the flyers that were mailed to addresses in Wauwatosa.
“We don't need third-party or outside interference in any election,” McBride said in a JSOnline report. “We should have the candidates state their positions fairly and honestly and let the voters decide.”
During the Feb. 18 primary, McBride was the top vote-getter, garnering 47 percent of the vote. Welch collected 35 percent out of the roughly 9,300 ballots that were cast that day.
Welch told Patch that her election campaign is doing well in light of recent news.
"The campaign is going well and I have received a lot of support and am proud of all the Wauwatosa citizens who have not been fooled and are willing to take time to think and look at the issues," she said.
