WAUWATOSA, WI — Wauwatosa's next police chief will officially get to work Monday.

MacGillis took the oath of office Friday as Chief of Police of the Wauwatosa Police Department. Wauwatosa City Clerk Steven Braatz administered the oath to MacGillis.

The Wauwatosa Police and Fire Commission chose MacGillis in a 4-1 vote in early July to be the next police chief. He spent more than 25 years working at the Milwaukee Police Department and retired as a police captain and director of training at the Milwaukee Police Academy, police said in a statement.

“Public safety is a shared responsibility,” MacGillis said in a statement. “We are here to serve and protect and community safety is our top priority. This, however, does not happen in a vacuum and that responsibility is shared by community, government and the police department. I will work
towards building community trust while problem solving and reducing crime for all citizens.”

Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride said that he was confident the commission would choose a chief who is a good communicator, works well with elected officials, keeps up with the latest policing standards and understands the department serves a diverse Wauwatosa and broad Milwaukee community.

The selection included a national search, community listening sessions and public input, McBride said at the ceremony.
