"In honor and memory of all the men and women who served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America to preserve our freedom." This is what a future monument will read in Wauwatosa's Hart Park. Local VFW and American Legion Posts have been fundraising to create a meaningful way to honor our veterans.
The space in Hart Park will be designed to be a place of reflection. The 7-foot tall black granite monument is planned for a quiet grassy area in the south part of Hart Park. Behind the monument will be seven flagpoles. One flag will have the national colors with the prisoner of war imagery, and six flags represent the service branches (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force). Nearby, there will be a memorial walkway with personalized bricks to honor veterans, family members, or friends who have served. This memorial area will be located along the walking path to the southeast of the Muellner building in Hart Park.

The entire memorial area may cost between $100,000 and $125,000 including the monument, flagpoles, site preparation, electrical work, landscaping, and benches. Multiple VFW Posts and an American Legion Post are fundraising for this effort. View more information about the project. The group says they are about halfway to their goal and are planning a small gathering on Veterans Day at 10:00 am at Hart Park to unveil a temporary sign at the monument's future location.
