Wautatosa Hiring Crossing Guards After Contractor Goes Under
The contractor abruptly went out of business, leaving a regional gap in crossing guard coverage in surrounding cities as well.
The City of Wauwatosa is hiring part-time crossing guards after being abruptly informed that the company who previously held the contract is going out of business. Multiple cities in the area have been affected by the closure, leaving a regional gap in crosswalk safety coverage.
West Allis-based Wisconsin Personal Protection Services, or WPPS, "appears to have gone out of business over the weekend with no advanced notification," Wautatosa officials said in a Facebook post.

"This is quite an emergency situation right now," the TMJ4 reported Wauwatosa Mayor Kathey Ehley as saying. "It's all hands on deck to help out."

"As soon as tomorrow, there may be no crossing guards at the previously assigned locations," the Waukesha School district said in a Facebook post.
Waukesha authorities are working to find new contracts as soon as possible.

"We bring this to your attention today so that if you feel you need to change transportation plans for your child, you have time to do so," the Waukesha school district said.
At least six school districts sent a note to parents on the matter, according to TMJ4.
Menomenee Falls community members are volunteering their time to fill the gap. The school district aims to have a contract by April 1, when students come back from break.
