Lane Closures Coming To I-43 Between Capitol And Hampton In March

On and off-ramps to the interstate will also be impacted as construction continues on Interstate 43 in Glendale, according to WisDOT.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Long-term lane closures are expected to begin the weekend of March 4 on Interstate 43 between Capitol Drive and Hampton Avenue, according to a project update from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Between Silver Spring Drive and Capitol Drive I-43 will be reduced to two lanes in each direction through late 2022, WisDOT's project brief says.

The Fiebrantz Avenue I-43 north entrance and the Green Bay Avenue I-43 south exit ramp will be closed through late 2022, WisDOT said.

The closures are part of a wider project to reconstruct and rehabilitate large parts of I-43 north of Capitol Drive. According to WisDOT, the project will address poor bridge and pavement conditions, as well as safety and traffic needs over the former Union Refrigerator Transit Company railyard.

  • Replacing the bridge over Glendale Avenue.
  • Replacing three bridges over the Milwaukee River and Hampton Avenue.
  • Replacing the existing noise wall west of I-43 with two new noise walls north of Capitol Drive on both sides of the highway.
  • The consolidation of Hampton Avenue traffic to a new improved ramp just south of Hampton.
  • Replacing the 1500 footbridge over an abandoned railyard with an embankment section roadway.
