🌱 13-Year-Old Admitted To Med School + Teen Injured In Shootout

Here are the top 3 stories in Birmingham today:
- A 14-year-old was injured in a West Birmingham shootout yesterday. At about 1:00 p.m., police were called to the scene in the 2100 block of Avenue J in Ensley. There, they learned that the teen victim had been taken to nearby Fire Station 16. The boy was taken to Children's of Alabama, where he is in stable condition and is expected to survive. At least 39 shots were fired in the shootout. Police do not believe the boy was the intended victim. (AL.com)
- This 13-year-old just made history as the youngest Black person to be admitted to medical school. Alena Wicker currently takes two full course loads at both Arizona State University and Oakwood University, and has been accepted at the Heersink School of Medicine at UAB. The 2022 Global Child Prodigy of the World and TIME's Top Kid of the Year nominee graduated from high school just last year. (Birmingham Times)
- An 11-year-0ld in West Birmingham was shot by their sibling on Monday. According to police, the shooting was an accident. The child was shot in the arm and is listed as having non-life-threatening injuries. Police are still investigating the incident, but as of Tuesday evening no arrests have been made.
