Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:

  1. The Mark Cuban Foundation is offering a free artificial intelligence bootcamp for high school students in Birmingham for the second year in a row. For four Saturdays from Oct. 22 to Nov. 12, students can learn how AI is already being used as well as how they can make their own AI applications. The deadline to apply is Sep. 1, and there are no prerequisites. (WBRC)
  2. Governor Kay Ivey announced three grants totaling over $10,000 on Tuesday to support efforts to reduce and prevent crime in Birmingham. Ivey said, "These grants offer another tool to help law enforcement agencies and community organizations take creative approaches to making our communities safer." The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program. (Alabama Political Reporter)
  3. The Birmingham City Council has passed legislation paving the way for railroad improvements. The decision authorized Mayor Randall Woodfin to apply for $10 million in funding for a planning and engineering project, which is just the first step of a larger project to improve the rail infrastructure on the Eastern side of Birmingham. The improved railroads would benefit underserved communities. (WVTM13 Birmingham)
