I have a few news items to check out to start the day, including a rather odd situation in Center Point where a mom got on a school bus to confront a kid, and a local environmental group discovered a bunch of dead fish in a local creek.   1. A 37-year-old Center Point woman has been arrested after law enforcement officials say she boarded a Jefferson County school bus and assaulted an 11-year-old child she claimed was bullying her kid. (Trussville Patch)
  2. The Black Warrior Riverkeeper discovered thousands of dead fish in Valley Creek yesterday near the Smithfield community. The local environmental group believes the problem originated from underneath the city. (WVTM13)
  3. For the second consecutive year, Miles College has increased its enrollment this fall. The school increased total enrollment this fall by 4 percent. (Birmingham Patch)
  4. This is something pretty cool going on in Woodlawn. This new skate shop and vintage clothing store is really breathing new life to the Woodlawn community. Check it out. (Bham Now)
  5. UAB Hospital is still critically caring for patients, but the good news is that COVID-19 cases have dropped in the city, and hospitalizations are slowly decreasing. (WVTM13)

  • Chris Stapleton is playing live at Oak Mountain. This guy puts on a fantastic live show. (7 p.m.)

  • As of Thursday, UAB Medicine has 115 COVID-19 hospitalizations. Of those hospitalizations, 10 are vaccinated, 105 are unvaccinated. In the ICU, 6 are vaccinated, 44 are unvaccinated. They have 42 patients on vents, 37 of which are unvaccinated. See the full chart on UAB Hospital's Facebook page.
  • Cahaba Brewing brings a taste of German tradition to the Magic City this Saturday the 18th, from noon-10 p.m. Cahaba's Oktoberfest beer is one of the best seasonal beers brewed in Birmingham. And you don’t want to miss the food, games, and all the craft beer at this fun Oktoberfest event. (Instagram)
  • Since 1998, the Symphony Volunteer Council of Alabama Symphony Orchestra has sponsored an annual music competition for talented students from age 12 through high school senior. Named in honor of the founding member of the volunteer organization for the ASO, the Lois Pickard Music Scholarship has awarded more than $85,000 to winners in three competition categories. Deadline for entry is January 7. (Details)

  • At Dread River Distilling, a new face is breaking the glass barrel one delicious drink at a time. Skyler Cuellar Noland is a female distiller in a male-dominated industry, and is creating some fantastic spirits right here in the Magic City. (Facebook)
