Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:

  1. On Sunday night, a shootout left one person dead and one person wounded in a Birmingham apartment complex parking lot. The shooting occurred at University Crossings in the 200 block of Third Ave. S.W. just before 9:00 p.m. 20-year-old Ke’mon Latrelle Nord was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and the second victim was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. 20-plus shots were recorded by the city's gunfire detection system, Shot Spotter. According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, multiple people fired weapons including a rifle and a shotgun. No arrests have been made at this time. (AL.com)
  2. The newest class of Leadership Birmingham has been named. Beginning on Sep. 8, the Class of 2023 will spend the next 10 months learning about the region. Throughout their time, leaders will visit multiple regional locations and learn about area challenges and opportunities from experts in education, government, diversity and inclusion, and more.   3. According to a new market analysis, Birmingham is the fourth fastest-growing startup city in the U.S. for the second quarter of 2022. New Hampshire-based York IE, an early-stage investment firm, shared that Birmingham saw $47M in funding for the second quarter. While Birmingham was the only city with less than $100 million in funding for the period, the Magic City firms saw an increase of 480 percent. (AL.com)
