- A shooting broke out in a small church meeting in a suburb of Birmingham on Thursday, killing two people and injuring one. According to Capt. Shane Ware with the Vestavia Hills Police Department, the unidentified suspect is in custody and the surviving victim is being treated for injuries at a hospital. The attack took place during St. Stephen's Episcopal Church's Boomers Potluck, the Rev. John Burruss said in a written statement. (CNN)
- A woman was arrested for making threats to Birmingham daycare staff and students. On Jun. 13, 26-year-old Kayla Warren got into an argument with an employee at New Hope Preschool and apparently threatened to shoot staff members and students. Warren has been arrested and charged with Terroristic Threats toward a school and is now being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $15,000 bond. (WBRC)
- Some Birmingham residents are concerned, as they've gone months without getting a water utility bill. Birmingham Water Works General Manager Michael Johnson cites a COVID spike among BWWB meter readers and a shortage of workers in the utility’s billing department for the backlog in bills, and for the utility having to estimate almost 1/3rd of its residential customers for the first two months of this year. However, many customers worry they'll be faced with a hefty, unmanageable bill during already lean times once BWWB works through its backlog. (WBRC)
