Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:
- A Birmingham man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for gun and drug charges. Terry Lee Skanes Jr., 22, was sentenced for possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine as well as possession of a firearm during and in relation to that drug trafficking crime. Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Skanes when they smelled cannabis and saw drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. (Trussvilletribune)
- Birmingham has named Sep. 19 through Sep. 25 "Rail Safety Week." The initiative is in partnership with Operation Lifesaver, a nonprofit organization nationally recognized in rail safety education. The goal is to spread awareness and safety information around railways. (WVTM13 Birmingham)
- The Birmingham police are continuing to investigate a fatal shooting in the Pratt City area. Officers were called around 5:30 p.m. for reports of a traffic accident and found a man in a car unresponsive. Officers discovered the man had been shot, but they are still pursuing the details of his death. (WVTM13 Birmingham)
