Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:
- After several weeks of being shut down, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society has resumed dog adoptions. Due to an outbreak of canine flu this summer, the shelter had to shut down dog adoptions at the end of July for several weeks; however, adoptions resumed yesterday with a line of people waiting to adopt when the shelter opened at noon. Currently, the shelter is offering $15 adoption fees for canine and feline adoptions. (AL.com)
- The first-ever U.S. Civil Rights Trail Market has opened at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Birmingham city leaders, state leaders, and others helped open the first-of-its-kind store, which features the Official U.S. Civil Rights Trail Book by author Lee Sentell, a mural highlighting the national and local civil rights movements, and branded Civil Rights Trail merchandise. The store is now open in Terminal C. (WBRC)
- On Wednesday, the Birmingham Police Department announced that a body found in a burned home two weeks ago has been identified as a man who went missing earlier this month. The victim, identified as 42-year-old Nathan Gemeinhart, went missing on Aug. 8 while checking on rental properties in west Birmingham. Youit De Witt Jones, 35, of Birmingham, is charged with capital murder and arson in connection with Gemeinhart's death and the fire at the house where Gemeinhart's body was found. (WVTM13 Birmingham)
