Fireball Caught On Film In Skies Over Alabama

A meteor traveling more than 30,000 miles per hour was seen in the skies over Alabama Sunday night.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Those fortunate enough to see the flash and streak of light in the skies Sunday night saw a meteor moving at more than 30,000 miles per hour.

The "fireball" spotted by several people in the state just before 6 p.m. Sunday, was captured on video and posted by meteorologist James Spann on social media.

"At 5:49 CT this evening, a meteor was first sighted 48 miles above Knoxville, southwest of Tuscaloosa," Bill Cooke of NASA said in a statement. "Moving southeast at 32,000 miles per hour, the fireball traveled 23 miles before disintegrating 28 miles above some fields southeast of Akron, AL."
