Birmingham Metro Flooding: Motorists Cautioned

Severe storms throughout central Alabama have caused dangerous flooding conditions in the Birmingham metro area.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham metro area was under a flash flood emergency for most of Wednesday night, and many roadways in the area are still in dangerous flood conditions Thursday morning.

Meteorologist James Spann said 8-12 inches of rain fell Wednesday night across parts of Helena, Pelham and Hoover, resulting in severe flooding. Here are some rain totals from that area:

  • Pelham — 12.12 inches
  • Lake Wilborn — 9.9
  • Creekside Drive/Hoover — 9.44
  • Riverchase — 8.91

At one point during the evening all roads in Pelham were considered impassable, and creeks and streams in the area will remain well out of their banks Thursday morning.

Hoover police said two people in a vehicle in Richerchase were swept away by flood waters and are still missing.
