📰 News we're reading

1. Here is where Alabama's first 12 medical marijuana dispensaries are planned (al.com) — Birmingham is slated to get two of Alabama’s first medical marijuana dispensaries, potentially opening as early as this spring if licensing stays on track. State regulators have picked four companies, set key January dates, and outlined how doctors and patients will move into the new medical cannabis system.

2. No rate hikes in 2026 for 770,000 Birmingham area water users amid controversial budget cuts (al.com) — Birmingham-area water customers will see no rate increase in 2026, but that freeze comes with sharp budget cuts and a more conservative regional board trimming programs tied closely to Birmingham. The restructured Central Alabama Water authority, which replaced the Birmingham Water Works Board, is slashing spending, debating minority vendor initiatives, and clashing with Mayor Randall Woodfin over a major federal loan for lead pipe replacement.

3. Teen honors late twin sister with massive holiday donation drive (wvtm13.com) — A 17-year-old is leading a massive holiday donation drive that kicked off at Birmingham City Hall and will visit local shelters like Pathways and Jimmie Hale Mission this week. Donations trucked in from California are being sorted in Birmingham and shared with people experiencing homelessness across central Alabama, along with homemade cookies to add some holiday comfort. Residents can even text Rose directly to volunteer or contribute.

4. Union Mourns the Loss of Brother Charles Harrison (smart-union.org) — Birmingham’s SMART-TD Local 847 is mourning the on-duty death of railroad worker Charles Harrison, who was killed in an accident on December 13, 2025. Federal investigators and the union’s safety team are reviewing what happened, while colleagues and family receive condolences from the broader rail union community.
