Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:

  1. Birmingham's Better Basics has been awarded grant funding to address long-term crime prevention while increasing local students' reading skills. The organization was founded in 1993 to eradicate illiteracy in the area while supporting students to achieve job placement. Last school year, Better Basics supported over 22,000 Birmingham students.   2. Authorities discovered a body in a burning car on Sunday in West Birmingham. The incident occurred in the 3200 block of Avenue S in Ensley in an apartment complex's parking lot. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the car fire and passed the victim's remains to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. The death is being investigated by the department as a homicide.   3. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office reports that a 60-year-old inmate was found unresponsive at the Williamson Donaldson Correctional Facility on Sunday. The inmate was serving a life sentence for murder and robbery. The Coroner's Office reports that no signs of foul play have been detected at this time. (WKRG)
