Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:
- A Birmingham man was killed in a St. Clair County crash on Friday morning. The incident occurred at about 4:50 a.m. near U.S. 321's 229-mile marker. Jawaune Morris, 26 years old, was driving a Honda Accord and struck a tree. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. (WIAT - CBS42.com)
- The Birmingham Police Department reports that Lavell Onterria Burton, 19 years old, has been arrested for murder. Burton has been accused of fatally shooting Stephen Lawrence Scott Jr. on Tuesday, Sep. 20, on Aspen Run. He is being held without bond for the Capital Murder charge. (Birmingham Police Department)
- Jefferson County Schools has five schools on the state's newest list of failing schools. The county had only one school on the list in 2019. Birmingham Superintendent Mark Sullivan reports that he will "not be satisfied until none of our schools are included on this list." The full list of schools is at the link. (AL.com)
